To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Zelda series, my school (Platt College) hosted The Legend of Zelda Art Exhibit at the Industry Showroom in downtown San Diego this past Friday (11/18/11)!
I got there at 8pm and stayed until around 10pm. Hundreds of people from school came but also the public and even associates of Nintendo showed up. There were raffles and snacks throughout the night as well as live music, which was pretty cool because the band played a lot of the game music (like Termina Field from OoT or the theme song). The building was completely packed shoulder to shoulder, I could hardly move an inch and look at the artwork the first hour I was there! Around 9:45 it started to clear out enough so I was able to walk around and spend some time looking at each piece clearly.
It took me a while to decided what I wanted to do a piece about considering how many awesome things there are about the Zelda games. I knew for sure I was going to do something from Link's Awakening, Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask, but I didn't know what exactly. I decided to stick to old school Zelda and honor the Gameboy Color revamp of the original Link's Awakening game. That game's ending was so emotional and I remember loving it every time I played through it.
This is a gouache painting on illustration board that I cut out and the school mounted on the wall. The Wind Fish is so cool yet so underrated but I feel satisfied knowing that the hardcore Zelda fans or old school gamers knew and appreciated my painting!
I wish I had more time to do more pieces for the gallery but I am so glad I decided to participate and I hope I get to do more events like this in the future!
